A Christmas Message
from Friends of Gashora
As we come to the end of another successful year, we at Friends of Gashora would like to extend our warmest Christmas wishes to you, our wonderful supporters, partners, and donors. For me the festive season is about generosity, hope, and human connection, and your support embodies all of these.
Because of you our weavers and sewers will soon have a proper workshop to call their own. Complete with toilet and sink, safe electrical outlets that don’t have to be off limits when it rains. Your efforts and kindness have opened so many doors not just for our sewers and weavers, but all the young people that now go to school, receive nutritious meals, and have medical insurance. You have created opportunities, and strengthened a community that believes deeply in the transformative power of education. Three more of our young beneficiaries have graduated from high school this year. Two are receiving government scholarships at the University in Kigali, and Innocent, one especially brilliant young man, much like Derrick, will be sponsored by FrOG. His name is Innocent. (Please read his two letters to Friends of Gashora below this message). He will start a 4 year civil engineering program in Muzanze, in the north or Rwanda.
This year your love, kindness and care also has supported our wonderful Miracle Workers to expand their team and supply them with the tools they need to continue to build kitchen gardens for the vulnerable families in Gashora, thus helping them to grow some much needed food for themselves. In total they built 42 gardens during their school holidays and the many Saturdays that they get together to work.

Because of our greater Friends of Gashora community far and near, JHA was able to deliver the following:
-
6,500 + people had access to clean water
-
1,700 + families received food from the JHA farm
-
250 children where sheltered, clothed and nourished
-
Medical insurance and first aid for 1,200 + people
-
20,000 litres of milk from the JHA dairy farm
-
20 families received micro loans with a rate of 2% interest to be paid
-
Provide essential resources and support to students through the FrOG and Afjhar school sponsorship programs
-
Fund programs that nurture leadership, innovation, and confidence
-
Strengthen the bonds between communities across continents and attract many young international interns through AIESEC.
The piggery farm continues to provide:
-
jobs
-
learning opportunities for the school children of all ages
-
volunteer opportunities
-
research opportunities
-
strengthens community building
Your belief in this mission continues to sustain it and we are profoundly grateful.
As we celebrate the holidays, please know that your support had made a meaningful difference and has touched countless lives. May this Christmas bring you peace, joy and moments of reflection on the good you have helped create in the world.
From all of us at Friends of Gashora, and our dedicated team in Gashora, thank you for your generosity, compassion and partnership. We look forward to continuing this journey with you in the year ahead.
Wishing you a joyful Christmas season and a hopeful New Year.

My name is NIYOMUGABO Innocent and I am writing to kindly request support to continue my education at university level. I was born in Gashora into humble family that struggled to provide school fees for me and my six siblings.when my parents divorced at the age of eight, my life become even more difficult, and I lost my chance to continue proper education. Even with my challenges, I refused to give up on my dream of becoming an educated and responsible young man who can contribute to my community.
I pushed my self, worked hard, and remained focused. Later, I was blessed to be supported by kindly family journey house action Rwanda, who paid my school fees in upper levels. Their love and guidance made me feel valued, supported, and no longer alone. I appreciate their help.
Now, I have completed my secondary education, my biggest dream is to join university. Unfortunately, I still lack the financial ability to pay for tuition and other academic requirements. For me I need to complete my studies, to achieve my goals, and later use my education to uplift my family and contribute positively to Rwanda”s development. I promised to work hard ,remain disciplined, and honor any support given to me .your help will not only change my life but will also give an opportunity to impact others in the future.
Thank you very much for your time to hear me. I would be grateful for any assistance or guidance you can offer.
Yours sincerely ,

In February 2018, my husband Neil and I went to Rwanda on a volunteer assignment. A friend of mine, who had worked with a group of basket weavers of Gashora in 2010 asked me to visit them to see how they were doing.

For as little as $70 a year you can be that person that changes a child's future for ever.
This program was started in 2020 in order to make a lasting impact on the lives of the most vulnerable children in Gashora.

Our handmade woven baskets are available in select stores on Vancouver Island!
